Torroella de Montgrí is six kilometers from the sea, and its old town is surrounded by walks following the old Roman defensive wall, remains of which can still be seen. With around 12000 inhabitants the town is a local center and not a town with many tourists. There are many bars, café´s, restaurant’s and local shops, a very nice place to be regardless of the time of the year.
Just walking in the old town next to the house with walking streets, old houses, many small shops, restaurants and bars is very special.
Special mention should be made of Les Bruixes Tower (15th-16th centuries) and Santa Caterina Gate (14th century). Sant Genís Church is a gem of Gothic architecture and should not be missed on a visit to the village. Also outstanding is the Romanesque Sant Antoni Chapel, set in the porticoed Plaça de la Vila Square. Also, in this square you will find Casa de la Vila House (15th-16th centuries), with its big sun dial. On Paseo de l'Església Avenue you will find El Mirador Palace (9th-14th centuries), which has been restored and is currently home to a luxury hotel.
Every Monday is a local market in the town and the town also has a number of museums. One of our guests said this is exactly what my wife and I are looking for the place is so authentic, so local and just a nice place to be.
The town and the area are full of great restaurants. Every little town has a number of good restaurants and there is a culture of eating good food at restaurants at very decent prices here. In Torroella you properly have at least 50 restaurants and many of them are really good.

Six kilometers from the house is L´ Estertit a beach town with a nice large sandy beach, where you can park the car at the end of the beach for free. In the summertime it is a very lively place with many bars and restaurants, bars and activities. Outside of the cost of Estertit is the small island Meda Gran a group of protected islands where many snorkelers and divers go. It will take you 10 minutes from the house to be at a very nice beach.
Pals is 8 kilometers from the house and a historical town you should visit.
Pals has a historic center on a hill surrounded by plains with a medieval Romanesque tower built between the 11th and 13th centuries, known as the Torre de les Hores (Tower of the Hours). A clock tower, it is 15 meters high.
The Gothic Quarter of the town has been substantially restored and there are cobbled streets interrupted by semicircular arches, façades with pointed arched windows and stone balconies. The town wall contains four square towers which date from the 4th century. The Josep Pla viewpoint (from which can be seen the fields of Empordà and the Medes Islands), the Plaça Major, the tombs in the Carrer Major and the Romanesque church of Sant Pere are other features of the town. There is an archaeology museum.
Just 10 kilometers away is the very popular Pals de Mar with a large beach and some very good restaurants with direct view to the ocean.
One of the most attractive and expensive towns about 13 kilometers away is Begur where you have many exclusive restaurants and beaches
About 17 kilometers away is a larger town Palafrugell where you beach with many restaurants as well.
12 kilometers north of the house you have another large beach town L'Escala again a town with many shops, restaurants and large beach areas.
Girona is a city in northern Catalonia, Spain, at the confluence of the Ter, Onyar, Galligants, and Güell rivers and It is about 40 kilometers from the house.
The riverside with houses in many different collers is a known sign of Girona. Girona is the capital of the province. Since much of the old quarter of this ancient city has been preserved, it is a very interesting city to visit and also a place with many shopping opportunities.
For the people with an interest in football Girona is now in La Liga and will play against all the big Spanish teams.
Figueres is another larger city about 35 kilometers from the house. In Figueres is the famous museum of Daly it is really worth a visit. About 800 meter from Dali museum is San Fernando Castle. It is considered the largest bastion fortress in Europe. It was built to respond to the need to reinforce the frontier to protect the Spanish region of El Ampurdán from invasion by foreign troops. Figures also have many shops and restaurants in a very interesting old town.
